Transforming connectivity at one of the UK’s busiest hospitals
University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) is one of the largest hospitals in the West Midlands, home to one of the country’s busiest Emergency Departments and a renowned teaching Trust known for its impressive medical research.
Created in 2014, UHNM is made up of Royal Stoke Hospital, County Hospital, and Staffordshire Children’s Hospital at Royal Stoke. Today, more than 13,000 staff work across its three sites, delivering care to around three million patients.
As well as being one of the region’s largest healthcare providers, UHNM has a clear ambition: to be a world-class centre of clinical and academic achievement, bringing people together to deliver the very best patient care, and creating a place where people come to learn, work, and carry out research.
But with a fragmented, outdated network, UHNM needed a seamless transformation.
Until recently, its network was governed by a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) contract signed before the iPhone existed, locking the Trust into outdated technology until 2044.
Wi-Fi wasn’t even part of the original specification.
In 2023, UHNM made a bold move. It broke away from the legacy contract and brought network and collaboration services in-house, building its own specialist team.
We worked closely with the Trust’s digital teams to support this transition.
Together, we created a robust and stable infrastructure designed to meet the demands of a major trauma centre. The new network ensures that staff and devices remain reliably connected across all sites, supporting day-to-day operations and high-quality care.
With a stronger digital foundation in place, UHNM is better positioned to support its ongoing ambitions, delivering care at scale while improving experiences for staff and patients alike.
